Waynesburg University’s annual “Who’s Your Neighbor Week” will take place Sunday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Oct. 19. The week will include numerous events implemented to focus on the theme “It’s The End of The World as We Know It.”
Marlin and Sally Vis, former Jerusalem missionaries, will serve as the Who’s Your Neighbor Week speakers. Their lecture titled “Light for the World” will take place Monday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall. Admission is free, and the public is cordially invited. The couple will also speak at the University’s chapel service Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. in Roberts Chapel.
“The theme is a play off the fact that many believe the Mayan Calendar is predicting the end of the world on December 21, 2012,” Sarah Brandstetter, Bonner Scholar Coordinator, said. “It also has a dual meaning of when we choose to live for Christ, ‘It’s the end of the world as we know it.’”
Marlin & Sally Vis are a married couple who have been doing mission and ministry work together for more than 40 years. For the past six years, the Vises have been involved as representatives of the Reformed Church in America serving alongside the Palestinian Christian Community in a ministry of reconciliation and hope. Their primary partner is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land.
Marlin began his career as a teacher and coach. From there, he attended and graduated from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Mich. The Vises have served two churches in Southwest Michigan: Southridge Reformed Church in Portage for twelve years and Beechwood Reformed Church in Holland for seven years.
Marlin worked as a Campus Minister at Grand Valley State University for five years, serving a diverse population of students and faculty. During this same period Sally worked as an Administrative Assistant in Admissions at Western Seminary.
