Students to travel to Patzun, Guatemala during Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving break, 18 Waynesburg University students will serve at the Centro Nutricional y Hogar de Ninos in Patzun, Guatemala. Led by Heidi Szuminksy, director of donor and alumni relations at Waynesburg University, and her husband, Brandon Szuminsky, lecturer of communication at Waynesburg University, the group will depart Saturday, Nov. 17 and return Saturday, Nov. 24.

“The children who live at the nutritional center captured my heart,” Heidi said. “I keep going back because I want so badly to make the lives of these children better, even if it is in a small way. I also am passionate about taking students on this trip because it is eye-opening to see the poverty in Guatemala.”

This trip marks the 11th year that students have assisted the Franciscan nuns at the children’s home. While there, activities will be provided for the children, including a carnival, sports, music and crafts.
