Waynesburg University will host its fourth annual Sports Announcing Summer Camp Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21 on the campus of Waynesburg University. Hosted by Lanny Frattare, assistant professor of communication at Waynesburg University, the camp will afford high school students the opportunity to train with well-known professionals.
The camp will include workshops throughout the week with past and present professionals in the sports announcing industry. The following will serve as mentors and teachers for the students:
Lanny Frattare is known as one of the most recognizable personalities and voices in Pittsburgh and major league baseball. He spent 33 years as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates broadcast team, before joining the Waynesburg University teaching staff. His stay with the Pirates is the longest of any play-by-play announcer in team history.
Bill Hillgrove is a senior member of the WTAE-TV sports team, serving as the Pittsburgh Steelers Insider. He has been the play-by-play voice of the Pittsburgh Panthers football team for 37 years and has been the voice of Pitt basketball for 42 years.
John Steigerwald is an internet talk show host at www.tribweb.com and a Sunday columnist for the Observer-Reporter. From 1978 to 1985, he served as a sports anchor with WTAE-TV. Steigerwald also worked for KDKA-TV as a sports anchor until 2007. His book, “Just Watch the Game,” was recently released and is being called “a one-of-a-kind book on Pittsburgh sports.”
Paul Steigerwald is the play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Root Sports. He spent six seasons as the radio voice of the Penguins and the previous 14 seasons as the color commentator on Penguins TV and radio broadcasts. Steigerwald has worked in the industry since 1979 when his career started with the Johnstown Red Wings.
Frattare believes the camp offers a great experience for high school students interested in broadcasting.
"Waynesburg University is proud of the success the sports announcing camp has enjoyed,” said Frattare. “The students who attend are exposed to the perfect blend of theory, hands on experience and team building. I am impressed by the commitment to sports announcing displayed by a large percentage of the campers."
